Here is a guide on how to take care of your fursuit and to make sure your enjoy your fursuiting experience. If you have any doubt on one of these aspects or would like more info, feel free to contact me!These instructions only apply to fursuit heads, bodysuits and parts made by SHR1MPC0R3, please refer to your respective fursuit maker for appropriate and specific care instructions!
Public and/or outdoor fursuiting
• Make sure your area allows for public fursuiting, if unsure, stay within bounds of the con venue. Even when legal, make sure you are accompanied by a handler (someone out of suit) when fursuiting in public.
• The role of a handler includes but isn't limited to: spotting hazards and helping the fursuiter navigating around them (curbs, small poles, rabid children, puddles etc), carry the fursuiter's personal belongings like their ID, offer drinks and snacks to the fursuiter (preferably water and carb heavy snacks), assist the fursuiter in unsafe areas (road crossings, stairs, etc), provide an explanation to curious by-standers and diffuse dangerous situations.
• Avoid fursuiting if you feel exhausted, lightheaded, overly hungry or thirsty or if you are intoxicated.
• Check the weather forecast to avoid rain and muddy areas. Before wearing a fursuit
• Gently brush the head and more thoroughly brush the bodysuit, handpaws, feetpaws and tail.
• Always brush away from the fursuit's face to follow the natural direction of the hair (from the nose towards the cheeks, from the bottom to the top of the ears, from the shoulders to the hands, from the chest to the feet, from the base of the tail to the tip)
• If after brushing, the fur still looks fuzzy, alternate between brushing and rubbing a damp cloth on the fur to guide it in the right direction.
• Inspect the inside of the head for any bits of fur that could bother you during wear.
• Inspect the bodysuit for popped seams and fix those before wear as they might get worse upon wearing.
• Wear a balaclava and an under armour to keep the fursuit from being in direct contact with your skin and sweat.
• If you have sensitive skin, apply a generous layer of face cream to protect your face from the friction.
• It is easier to attach the handpaws, feetpaws and tail to the bodysuit before putting the suit on, especially if you are suiting up on your own. While wearing a fursuit
• Avoid getting in contact with anything greasy or that could stain the fursuit, people carrying food or drinks, wet and/or muddy ground, dirty benches etc.
• Take frequent breaks especially if you're out of breath, light headed or uncomfortably hot.
• Do not be scared to remove your fursuit head in public if you feel threatened, light headed or disoriented, safety first! After every wear
• Spray the inside of the fursuit with fursuit spray. Inside the head, handpaws, feetpaws and bodysuit, specifically around areas that tend to build up sweat such as the armpits .
• Leave all parts to dry in a well-ventilated area or on dedicated fursuit lounge fans. The head is best left to dry upside down with the neck open if no fan is available.
• Inspect the fursuit for any stain or damage and contact me, the maker, to discuss cleaning procedure. Most stains can be removed by gently patting it with a damp cloth but some stains can just be "peeled off" once dry, or fur can be lightly trimmed to remove the stained fibre tips.Deep cleaning
• Make sure to properly clean your fursuit every 8 to 10 hours of active wear to avoid bad odours from developing and keeping it fresh.
• The head requires to be hand washed, do not attempt to machine wash the head.
• If applicable, remove the hair, tongue, padding and eyes of the fursuit.
• Wash the hair and tongue by hand. Do not machine wash because the strong magnets can interfere with the metallic parts of the machine.
• The padding can be machine washed along with the rest of the parts.
• To clean the head, use a wet cloth with a little bit of baby shampoo and gently rub the fur in circular motions. Do the same for the inside of the head.
• Rinse away the shampoo using a shower head and make sure there are no residues of soap.
• Use a dry towel or spot cleaner to absorb as much water as possible. Ring any water left in the padding.
• Brush the fursuit head as you would normally and leave it to dry upside down, with the neck open in a very well ventilated area, away from the sun, until fully dry. If possible, use fans directly pointed at the inside of the head to accelerate the drying process.
• Handpaws, feetpaws, tails and bodysuits can be machine washed only if properly contained in a pillow case. A regular mesh bag is not enough as the tumbler might catch on claws and other bits.
• Smelly areas like the crotch and the armpits might require extra washing. Use a wet cloth with a bit of baby shampoo to properly clean those areas before washing the bodysuit in the machine.
• Use a gentle cycle, cold water (MAX 30°C), low spinning speed, with a little bit of detergent for smell, NEVER TUMBLEDRY.
• Do not under any circumstance use any kind of heat on fur parts as it will irreversibly damage the fibres. NO DRYER, NO HAIRDRYER, HEAT IS VERY BAD.
• Use a dry towel to absorb excess water and leave the parts to dry on a rack in a well ventilated area, away from the sun, until they are fully dry.
• When wet, avoid hanging the bodysuit by the shoulders or hand paws by the cuff as the water weight will pull the fabric down and deform it.
• While still damp, brush the fur in the right direction to guide the fibres in the right direction and prevent your suit from looking scruffy over time.Storing
• Store the fursuit in a well ventilated area and away from the sun.
• Avoid storing the fursuit in a box or luggage for extended periods of time.
• Do not store anything directly on top of the fursuit as the weight will cause deformation and potentially irreversible damage.
